Fitting Tribute to Erick’s

Saturday brought Free Poker Network’s (FPN) Minnesota State Championship.  It was Karaoke Phil’s 11th consecutive MN State Championship.  Perhaps more importantly, it was the final state championship which will have qualifiers from Erick’s Bar.  The City of St. Paul purchased the bar and it is now closed.

Eleven of the eligible Erick’s qualifiers journeyed to Shooting Star Casino in Mahnomen, MN for the Championships and a chance to win a seat at Nationals for FPN’s HPT Dream Package giveaway.  In all 209 players attended with the top 20 advancing.
Our own Karaoke Phil, a two-time FPN National Qualifier, again went deep.  He ultimately finished 32nd his third deep-showing-with-a-miss finish.  But, it meant 5 Erick’s qualifiers finished in the top 32 and four of the final 20 players were Erick’s players.

Among the 20 winners pictured right are Nick Krier, Tim Dieterle, John Rossbach and David Wilts – all from Erick’s.

The deep runs and 20% of the qualifying field reinforce an earlier post alluding that Erick’s was one of the best/toughest poker bar’s in the country. And, while Karaoke misses his third national qualifier he can take solace knowing that Wilts (he knocked Karaoke out A/Q<5s), Krier (his travel mate up to the casino) and all around nice guy Dieterle all advance.  A fitting tribute to Gary Erickson and Erick’s Bar!
